Torana Rebuild Series Ep. 2: Uncovering History & Starting the Rebuild
April 7, 2025
Reviving the Torana: A Sneak P
April 30, 2025Introduction
In this special episode, we’re taking a break from the workshop to focus on the design vision for my Torana rebuild. I’ll be sharing:
- Never-before-seen 3D renders of the plans
- The design process behind every decision
- How my career with Holden has helped shape this project
- A quick update on Dale’s progress
1. Quick Build Update
Before we dive into design, here’s where things stand:
- The shell is completely stripped at Ward Paint & Fabrication
- Dale’s making great progress on structural repairs
- We’re waiting for some key milestones before filming the next workshop update
“The repairs are going better than expected – which means we can focus on making this Torana truly special.”
2. My Design Background
This build draws on my 11 years designing for Holden, where I worked on:
- Special edition models (VF Sandman, Final Edition Commodores)
- Race car liveries for ACDelco Racing Teams as well as working with Triple 8 Racing and Team 18
- Trips to SEMA and behind-the-scenes at Holden Design
After Holden closed in 2017, I launched The Render Garage to bring professional 3D design to the classic car scene.
3. The Design Process
Every project I do follows three stages and this build is no different.
Dream It
- Inspired by brands like Singer and Ruffian Cars as well as high-end Pro-Touring builds from SEMA
- Goal: Timeless design that won’t look dated in 5 years
- Key influences from SEMA 2023 and 2024: brushed finishes, integrated aero
Visualise It
- Created multiple render iterations before finalizing the look
- Printed posters to “live with” the design
- Refined details after getting feedback from trusted builders
Build It (Coming Soon!)
- All designs will be tested in 3D before fabrication begins
- Using 3D scanning to ensure perfect fitment
4. The Renders: Key Design Features
Here’s what makes this Torana unique:
1. Smoothed Flares
- Removed exposed bolts for cleaner lines
- Inspired by the Singer DLS
- Allows for wider wheels and lower stance
2. Integrated Front Spoiler
- Solves the Torana’s awkward flare/spoiler junction
- Will be 3D printed for perfect fitment
3. Brushed Satin Finishes
- Modern alternative to chrome
- Uses removable wrap for easy updates
4. Custom Rear Wing
- Notched design inspired by top Pro-Touring builds
- Maintains classic Torana character
“Every change serves a purpose – nothing’s just for show.”
5. What’s Next?
- Finalizing wheel designs (teased in a future episode)
- Beginning 3D printing of prototype parts
- Returning to the workshop for major fabrication
I want your input! Comment below:
- What design detail excites you most?
- Would you like a deeper dive on the 3D process?
Conclusion
This is more than a rebuild – it’s a reimagination of what a Torana can be. By combining classic styling with modern technology, we’re creating something truly unique.
